Tree removal vs trimming: price the right work

Removing an entire tree, pruning its crown and grinding its stump are different jobs. Start with the outcome you need.

Decide what problem you need to solve

Describe the concern before asking for removal: clearance over a roof, a damaged limb, shade, disease concerns or a change to the property. A qualified arborist can assess whether pruning or another intervention is appropriate. This website cannot diagnose a tree from its height or a budget form.

A removal estimate covers taking down the tree according to a written scope. It does not automatically include every branch being hauled away, removing the stump, repairing a lawn or planting a replacement.

Why pruning is a separate estimate

Pruning prices depend on the work selected, access and the condition of the tree. A percentage of a removal price is not a reliable pruning quote. Ask for the intended pruning work in writing and who will perform it.

Avoid requesting indiscriminate cutting solely to meet a price target. Ask the arborist to explain the effect of the proposed work on the tree and on nearby property.

Ask for alternatives before signing

Request a written comparison of viable options, including monitoring or retention if appropriate. If removal is recommended, ask why and what inspection supports it. Confirm whether permissions or an arborist report are necessary for the selected option.
